Cassandra Miller
Writing has always been Cassandra’s passion. From the moment she recited an original poem in front of her third grade class – an epic work about a cat – she knew she was a writer. Her three novels (so far) provide proof that she has moved on to more complex subject matter, though pets do appear in all three.
Becoming a professional writer, however, first occurred to Cassandra in high school, when her wonderful English teacher, Mr. Olthius, approached her in the hall one day and asked simply, “Have you been writing anything lately?” It was a question that surprised and flattered her. “No,” she answered. “Oh,” was his response. “You should be,” and he walked on. From that point forward, Cassandra vowed to take her writing as seriously as Mr. Olthius did.
Writers must always be readers, and Cassandra is a lover of the classics as well as modern fiction of all types. Charles Dickens, Kurt Vonnegut, Fannie Flagg, Sue Monk Kidd, Pat Conroy, and of course the great Alice Walker have all inspired awe, enormous admiration, and created lofty aspirations for her as a writer.
In her fifteen years as a social worker providing services to elderly and disabled adults, Cassandra came to know many multi-faceted and fascinating people. It is her greatest ambition to create fictional characters of such complexity and humanity.
In Toasting Cora, Cassandra explores the themes of aging, the power of friendship and the impact of a single chance encounter on another’s life.
Sage Along the Way, her second novel, deals with the long term effects of cruelty and abuse, and the concepts of forgiveness and the human capacity to change. Sage, Blooming continues the story of Sage, her friends, and family.
All three novels do indeed feature vivid, flawed, relatable characters: people you will enjoy knowing.
